Today’s Action: Demand city and state action for separated children

Last Friday, the Trump Administration claimed they’d fulfilled the court order to reunite the 3,000 children separated from their parents by Trump’s unnecessary Zero Tolerance policy.

Here’s the truth:

  • Over 750 children are still separated from their parents, including 46 under the age of 5
  • The parents of at least 431 of these children have been deported…and Trump’s government doesn’t know how to contact them
  • The government claims all deported parents were given the choice to leave with their children — but the ACLU strongly suspects many parents were tricked, misinformed, or flat-out not offered this choice..

Trump’s administration has done such a poor job tracking separated children that hundreds were placed in facilities New York City…without the knowledge of the mayor. We must call on our own governors and mayors to launch investigations, using the power of state and city resources to counter Trump’s humanitarian crisis.

Email or call your state governor and your city mayor and demand they launch an investigation to see how many migrant children separated from their parents by the federal government are currently under their purview — and take immediate steps towards reunification.

And of course: hundreds of families are now reunited but still living in mass detention centers. And numerous heartbreaking reports continue to roll in of children who have been sexually and physically abused, are lice-ridden and unbathed (for months), and of younger babes no longer recognizing their parents due months of separation.

Your efforts are working – Trump has been forced to back down on multiple policies, and thankfully thousands of children are now reunited (though many are still jailed with their parents). We must continue this push for those still separated, who are no less deserving.

Call or email your governor and your mayor, and demand an investigation into how many children separated by the federal government are currently housed in your state and city — and ask them to take immediate steps to reunite any children with their parents.
