Today’s Action: Honor Dr. King by exercising the rights he helped enshrine

As we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., let’s remember one of the Civil Rights Movement’s key hard-fought victories was the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which at long last enshrined into law the notion that African Americans — and indeed all adult U.S. citizens — have a sacred right to vote.

Just over a half century later, efforts continually rage to undermine the spirit of the law and deny that right to minorities in an insidious attempt to win elections by denying citizens a voice in our own government.

But these are not the only threats to equal representation under the law. Less devious, but no less dangerous, is the abdication of that right by tens of millions of us who fail to vote.

Today, let’s honor the legacy of Dr. King by exercising the right that he and millions of others fought so hard to secure. Ensure your voter registration is up-to-date at Vote.org, and then share this tool with your friends and loved ones to get them ready to make their voices heard in this year’s all-important elections.

Sixty years ago, Dr. King uttered these powerful words:

“So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote I do not possess myself. I cannot make up my mind — it is made up for me. I cannot live as a democratic citizen, observing the laws I have helped to enact — I can only submit to the edict of others.”

He and countless others made incredible sacrifices to ensure most of us would not have to submit to the edict of others — while millions must still fight to be heard. For those of us who too often take the vote for granted, let us honor the struggle and leadership that made it possible.

Confirm your registration and help others do the same today.

When we show up at the ballot box to make our voices heard, we not only honor Dr. King’s legacy, we ensure it continues to live on.

BONUS: You can also check out and share Rock the Vote’s excellent voter resource tools and do your part to restore the voting rights of 1.6 million Floridians.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition telling Trump to stop the racist excuses and get Puerto Rico the help it needs, and join the Americans telling the Senate to stop Jeff Sessions’ drug war escalation and decriminalize marijuana!
