Today’s Action: Tell the Senate to pass the prescription drug bill
House Democrats have passed their landmark legislation, HR 3: The Elijah Cummings Lower Drugs Costs Now Act, and holy moly do we need it: three in ten Americans have reported not taking their prescription medication this year due to the cost. Lowering prescription drug prices is a bipartisan issue that both parties have publicly pronounced their interest in tackling.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where Mitch McConnell has vowed to not bring it to a vote. That means it’s up to us to force his hand. The Senate is under pressure to develop their own drug bill in response to the House’s, which means they’ll be listening to their constituents.
- Allow drugs to be imported from Canada,
- Set limits on out-of-pocket drug costs,
- Require drugs to be sold for the same rate domestically as they are internationally,
- Get generic drugs on the market faster;
- Allow Medicare to directly negotiate prices on as many drugs as possible.
This is a rare moment when leaders on both sides of the aisle are hearing the same thing from their constituents, which means even Trump could be pressured into going along with a positive step for a change.
We must be crystal clear about what we want: a really good bill, not a watered down band-aid-of-a-fix that allows politicians to celebrate without doing enough to help consumers.
