Today’s Action: Critical push for pandemic relief before protections expire
Vaccine updates: healthcare workers and seniors in care facilities will likely see vaccination in January/February, essential workers and seniors in March, and the remaining population by summer. In other words, we’re still in this for at least another six months…and protections run out at the end of this month.
Unemployment benefits end on December 26, affecting about 12 million Americans on top of the 4 million who have already lost them. The moratorium on evictions end on January 1, which could kick over 6 million Americans out of their homes in the middle of winter.
But while Democrats know pandemic support must be broad and far reaching to assist struggling communities, Mitch McConnell is still insisting on a narrow package that doesn’t even scratch the surface of what this country needs while ensuring liability protections for his corporate buddies.
We have passed 272,000 deaths and daily cases are far higher than ever before since this started…with more record-breaking spikes expected post-Thanksgiving holidays. Many states have reinstated restrictions and curfews as the virus spirals further out of control.
And even in the face of that…Republicans are refusing to address the soon-to-expire protections. For millions of families who are barely scraping by, this crisis is about to look even worse unless Mitch McConnell and his die-hard companions acknowledge how dire the situation is.
The Senate must face up to the hard truth that a lot more Americans are about to die or find themselves homeless as winter sets in, and the losses and pain are on Republican shoulders. We need real relief.
