Today’s Action: Release Trump’s Tax Returns – and hold Mnuchin and Rettig in contempt
For the past forty years, every single presidential candidate – Democrats and Republicans – have released their federal income tax returns to the public. This helps ensure transparency on conflicts of interest, domestic and international, so that no president uses the position for personal gain. Trump infamously has refused to release his.
Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee placed an official request to the Treasury Department in April, invoking a law which allows them to obtain any individual’s tax returns. But IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig and his boss, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, have stalled the request and failed to deliver.
This is a clear violation of the law, and Congress needs to hold Rettig and Mnuchin in contempt for their obstruction and protection of Trump.
We’ve seen countless warning signs of Trump’s conflicts of interest, including planning a new Putin-approved Trump Tower in Moscow during his candidacy and lying about it, and hand-crafting the GOP Tax Scam that singularly benefits billionaires and corporations. There may be many more that American voters deserve to know, and that’s the purpose of viewing his tax returns.
In America, no one is above the law – and every day that the Trump administration refuses to disclose the president’s returns is another day they are denying that core tenet.
