Today’s Action: Tell Congress to pass the Disarm Hate Act

We take a break from impeachment/election actions to talk about some really important policy that deserves your attention: the Disarm Hate Act, which would prohibit individuals convicted of committing a hate crime from purchasing or possessing firearms.

From 2010 to 2016, more than 50,000 hate crimes involved a firearm – terrifying numbers, particularly for the targeted groups that receive the bulk of hate crimes in our country, based on race, religion, and sexual orientation. And hate crimes are on a recent three-year rise, in correlation with Trump’s candidacy and presidency.

The Disarm Hate Act is a badly needed fix for a loophole in federal law, which already prohibits those convicted of a felony or domestic violence from gun ownership…but currently skips over hate crimes.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand they cosponsor and support the Disarm Hate Act, to keep firearms out of the hands of those who commit hate crimes. If they have already cosponsored (H.R. 2708/S. 1462), thank them and urge them to move forward!

This policy is important because it addresses both the rising acts of violence motivated by racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, anti-LGBTQ, disability, gender, and more — AND our gun violence and mass shooting epidemic in one single piece of legislation.

It’s certainly not the end point in stopping gun violence or hate crimes – but it’s a vitally important piece of the larger solution, and more Democrats ought to easily cosponsor (at least some “moderate” Republicans could be shamed into supporting too).

We can’t stop Trump from spewing hate to his base (unless Twitter kicks him off, oh happy day), but we can legislate against the violence he fuels…while, of course, we work to remove him from office entirely.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to support and cosponsor the Disarm Hate Act – curbing both gun violence and hate crimes in one move.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition telling House Democrat that Trump must be impeached, and check out the brilliant “Don’t Think of an Elephant” by George Lakoff — a quick read that contains the ultimate keys for Democrats to win elections — and arguments.
