Today’s Action: Don’t let Republicans gut Obama’s protections from banks
Trump and Congressional Republicans are making another shady move to turn government for-the-people into government for-the-corporation, hoping to remove crucial safeguards that restrict big banks from the investment and lending practices that led to the Great Recession in 2008.
In his first term as President, Obama and the Democratic Congress brought America back from our worst financial crisis in generations and the brink of a second Great Depression to one of the quickest economic recoveries of all time. One of these steps was the “Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act.”
But the Senate is expected vote TODAY on a bill that would gut Dodd-Frank and make all of us more vulnerable to reckless investments by big banks.
Call or email your Senators TODAY and demand their opposition to the so-called “Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.” Tell them we cannot allow wealthy bankers to run roughshod over the rest of us.
The bill has already passed the House, and would remove restrictions on any bank smaller than $250 billion — two dozen big banks that collectively received $47 billion in bailout funds in the 2008 crisis. This would make it easier for them to return to the destructive predatory practices and racial discrimination that caused the great recession in the first place.
While strong progressives like Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have expressed outrage over the bill, some more moderate Democrats are planning to support the measure — so it’s all the more important that we get to work now and make clear that we find this dangerous legislation unacceptable.
