Seriously?

Yes. Seriously.

Today’s Action: Pass the HEROES Act – don’t settle for the GOP’s handwave stimulus package

Two months after House Democrats passed the HEROES Act, Republicans have finally produced their pandemic stimulus bill. It’s called the Heals Act. And it’s a stinker.

The Heals Act differs from the HEROES Act in a few major ways:

  • It cuts the federal unemployment boost from $600/week to $200/week until states create a system that gives workers only 70% of their original wages
  • It keeps  businesses liability-free from employees who get sick while working in unsafe environments
  • It doesn’t provide any additional funding for struggling states
  • It doesn’t include hazard pay for essential workers
  • It provides next-to-no funding for election assistance and safety this November

Meanwhile, 150,000 Americans have died. They are killing us.

Call or email your Senators (including Democrats) and demand they pass the HEROES Act as-written, without watering it down. And tell them YOUR priorities: election safety, unemployment assistance, housing security, worker protections and more.

So what’s in the HEROES Act? The Democrats’ plan would provide $1 trillion in funding for state and local governments, an extension on robust unemployment insurance, funding for the United States Postal Service, moratoriums on evictions, and $200 billion in hazard pay for essential workers. It also includes $3.6 billion to fund a national option to vote-by-mail and boosted in-person safety measures for this November’s election.

And that last line item is especially important if we actually want the ability to vote Trump out this November. We’ve seen a preview of the poll madness that awaits us if Congress doesn’t approve a comprehensive election-safety plan for November – unsafe conditions, polling locations shut down in Democratic-leading counties, and ballots never appearing for thousands of Black voters.

We’re facing a public health, civil rights, and economic crisis all in one fell swoop. And the HEROES Act is our best chance through this mess until we vote in a new president this November.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators, regardless of their party, urge them to pass the HEROES Act as-written, and share the top 2-3 items you care about the most.
