Today’s Action: Tell your Members of Congress to push Biden on student loans!

At a town hall this week, President Biden rejected the call for providing up to $50,000-per-student in loan forgiveness, despite support from both moderates (like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY) and progressives (including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-MA and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY). Biden wants to cap it at $10,000, which unfortunately falls drastically short of the problem.

40% of current student loan holders do not have a college degree, putting them in a major predicament of having high monthly loan payments without the resume to pursue better paying employment. This astonishing percentage is not a fluke, but rather testament of the steep economic costs of higher education and other structural barriers to completing a degree.

For 43 million young people, the rising costs of education combined with the Great Recession and depleted job opportunities had created a $1.7 trillion debt crisis. And then the pandemic hit. Cancelling student debt would provide much-needed relief for millions of Americans AND inject our struggling economy with a massive, immediate stimulus.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them to apply pressure on Biden to support generous student loan forgiveness of $50,000 per student.

Student loan forgiveness would also go a long way toward closing a clear racial gap in wealth distribution. Students of color are disproportionately impacted, both in who holds the loans and how much those loans are, so much so that cancelling student loan debt has been called a major civil rights issue.

For example, Black college graduates owe an average of $25,000 more than White college graduates…and four years after graduation, nearly half of Black graduates owe 12.5% more on their debt than the original loan (vs. the 83% of white graduates who owe 12% less than they borrowed). And, half of Black borrowers and a third of Latinos default on their loans within 20 years.

We have an entire generation crushed under the weight of job scarcity and education costs, now struggling even harder due to the pandemic. Forgiving student loan debt tackles an economic stimulus and institutionalized racial inequities in one go – it’s a win/win situation.

Email or call your Members of Congress and demand they push Biden to support $50,000-per-student debt forgiveness!
