Today’s Action: Tell Congress to pass the Affordable Insulin Now Act!

The price of medicine is steadily rising while millions of people are still struggling financially due to COVID-19. 1/3 of Americans reported being unable to pay for household expenses as recently as four months ago, including medication. Thanks to our uniquely high drug prices and an antiquated, profit-generating health insurance industry, Americans spend significantly more money on prescription drugs than residents of any other developed nation. The price of insulin alone doubled between 2012 and 2016. Coupled with high costs of our healthcare in general, it’s no wonder many Americans struggled to cover basic health needs even before the pandemic.

Earlier this month, Sen. Raphael Warnock introduced the Affordable Insulin Now Act, and it quickly picked up a major endorsement from the American Diabetes Association. The legislation would cap out-of-pocket insulin expenses at $35 per month for patients using Medicare and private insurance — a massive improvement from the annual $6,000 per-person price tag estimated by the Health Care Cost Institute in 2019.

Call (202.224.3121) or email your members of Congress and tell them we need the Affordable Insulin Now Act!

For decades, we’ve been caught in a Big Pharma stranglehold. The pharmaceutical lobby spent $27.5 million cajoling Congress in 2018, surpassing the $25 million they spent to fight the Affordable Care Act in 2009. And that doesn’t include the additional $194 million individual companies spent lobbying in 2018 alone to keep drug prices high and generic brands out.

We need comprehensive protection from rising prescription costs, but insulin is a critical place to start. Providing people with affordable, life-sustaining medication should not be a partisan issue, and there’s no reason Big Pharma should be allowed to price gouge 9 million Americans suffering from diabetes.

Call (202.224.3121) or email your members of Congress and demand they support the immediate passage of the Affordable Insulin Now Act!
