Today’s Action: Support the Background Check Expansion Act

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CN) has been a leading voice for gun reform since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, when 26 people (mostly 6-7 year olds) lost their lives to gun violence in his home state. Five years later, in the wake of the October 2017 Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs shootings that killed 58 and 26, respectively, Murphy introduced the Background Check Expansion Act. This comprehensive bill would finally make background checks on gun purchases virtually universal.

We are beginning to see positive change emerging from devastating loss of life these past months: many states rapidly enacted lifesaving legislation in the wake of the Parkland, FL shooting that claimed 17.

But the GOP-led Congress has stayed silent, scared to speak out against their NRA campaign sponsors. And they should be scared…for their jobs, because 90% of Americans support comprehensive background checks on gun purchases, including their own constituents.

It’s time for Congress to act, and Murphy has the bill to do it. Call or email your Members of Congress and demand their support for the Background Check Expansion Act.

This act will require a federal background check for all gun sales, including the previously-unregulated private sales, gun shows, and online sales that account for approximately 25% of all guns purchased. With over 90% of Americans supporting comprehensive background checks, it’s time for Congress to listen to the people.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand their support for the Background Check Expansion Act. It’s lifesaving common sense…so why isn’t it the law yet?

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to end Republicans’ discriminatory voter suppression laws, and join the Americans demanding Congress protect Dreamers NOW!
