Today’s Action: Tell your governor to abolish the state death penalty

The Trump Administration has executed ten men since bringing back the federal death penalty in May 2019, a practice that had been on hiatus since 2003. Last week, two Black men, Brandon Bernard and Alfred Bourgeois, were put to death.

This came despite public outcry against Bernard’s case, as it was revealed in 2018 that his defense team had been denied access to key information – and 5 of his jurors have since publicly stated their minds have changed as a result.

Joe Biden has pledged to abolish the federal death penalty when he enters office. But 28 states have their own and will carry on, unless we fight to overturn them.

First, if your state has a death penalty, call or email your Governor and state legislators and demand they abolish it. And regardless of state law, call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to publicly support the abolishment of the federal death penalty.

Since 1973, more than 170 people sentenced to death in the US have been exonerated. In short, we’re killing innocent people. That’s a big reason why the death penalty has been banned in 106 countries and many more have official moratoriums. The United States is in the small minority that still uses capital punishment, against the stance of the United Nations, which has stated it has “no place in the 21st century.”

Just like our policing practices, capital punishment is rife with systemic injustice. Death row sentences are disproportionately given to people of color (42% of those on death row are Black, despite only being 13.4% of the population) and when the victim is white.

Nearly all of those on death row come from poverty, and many are mentally disabled – folks far less able to afford quality legal representation and psychiatrists. And in fact, age, sex, economic class, and location are much stronger indicators of who will receive a death penalty sentence than the actual crimes, which are relatively indistinguishable from those that receive prison sentences.

We have no justification for upholding capital punishment. It’s time to catch up with the rest of the world and abolish the death penalty.

Check to see if your state has a death penalty – if so, email or call your Governor and state legislators and demand they abolish it. All states: email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to support Joe Biden’s pledge to abolish the federal death penalty.
