Today’s Action: Demand transparency on Kavanaugh
When Chief Justice Roberts (leans right) and Justice Kagan (leans left) were nominated and subsequently confirmed for the Supreme Court of the United States, they both first went through a rigorous examination of past their writings and documentations as part of their Senate confirmation process.
Trump’s current nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, has a similar extensive record of writings, which range from his opinions on whether a current president can be compelled to testify before a special counsel (NOPE) and his involvement in Bush-era torture policies (and whether he’s lied under oath about it).
The American public deserves to see the full details, just as we have with other Justices… but Senate Judiciary Committee chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is planning to skip this step and push Kavanaugh’s nomination through in secrecy.
Unacceptable. Kavanaugh must receive the same amount of scrutiny as past Justices.
Call the Senate Judiciary Committee’s main line at 202.224.5225 and demand a transparent and full review of Kavanaugh’s body of work before referring his nomination to the full Senate.
Even without full documentation, we know Trump’s pick is a dangerous choice for the Supreme Court:
- Upheld discriminatory voter ID laws in South Carolina, blocking an estimated 80,000 people of color from voting, and is strongly opposed by the NAACP
- Opposes even the most common sense safeguards on semi-automatic weapons, calling any restriction unconstitutional
- A major threat to Roe v. Wade and all abortion rights
- Believes net neutrality violates internet providers’ freedom of speech and said he would rule any net neutrality regulations, even if they were laws passed by Congress
To sum up: racist, trigger-happy, corporate-friendly, and against the Trump-Russia investigation. Chuck Grassley knows it…and he’s trying to keep it covered up.
Call the Chuck Grassley and the entire Senate Judiciary Committee at 202.224.5225 and demand a complete and transparent investigation of Kavanaugh’s body of work before he’s referred to the full Senate for nomination.
