Today’s Action: Gun safety laws NOW!

There were 693 mass shootings last year in the United States just last year. Excluding suicide, there were 20,726 gun deaths by the end of 2021.

Sadly, kids aren’t exempt from the trauma of American gun violence – despite months of virtual, online schooling last year, there were still 42 acts of gun violence on K-12 campuses. According to the Washington Post, a child is shot every hour in America. And despite these startling numbers, an estimated 18.8 million guns were still sold last year, and six states passed permit-free concealed-carry laws.

In the face of unthinkable trauma, violence, and suffering that has only escalated over the course of the pandemic, we are still waiting for adequate, sensible gun reform. It’s well past time for fundamental change.

Call (202.224.3121) or email your members of Congress and demand comprehensive, common sense gun safety laws to stop mass shootings, including universal background checks and expanded waiting periods.

Marginalized people are threatened the most by gun violence. Deaths of transgender/gender non-conforming people are severely underreported due to a multitude of system failures, and yet, 2021 was still the most violent year for the group on record. Black children are four times more likely to die from gun violence than their white peers.

We’ve experienced a violent and traumatic year. Mass shootings, a brazen insurrection, hundreds of thousands of COVID deaths – it hasn’t been easy. Our legislators must not make violence any more accessible by refusing to enact sensible gun-safety laws.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your representatives and demand universal background checks and expanded waiting periods – common-sense gun-safety laws broadly supported by Americans from both sides of the aisle!

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to expand the Supreme Court, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
