Today’s Action: The BREATHE Act for George Floyd and Ma’Khia Bryant

George Floyd left us on May 25, 2020. His death, his name – his life – has inspired nationwide outrage, pain, and an amplification of calls for change in the systemic racism and brutality in our policing system. Yesterday, the man who killed him, former officer Derek Chauvin, was found guilty of two charges of murder and one of manslaughter.

This is the beginning of accountability. But it is certainly not the end. Because in Columbus, Ohio, only 20 minutes before Chauvin’s verdicts were announced, a 16-year-old Black girl named Ma’Khia Bryant was shot and killed by the police she called to help her.

A single court case with a just outcome does little to curb the broad structural white supremacy in our law enforcement, which kills a grossly disproportionate number of Black people every year. We must have The BREATHE Act.

For George Floyd. For Ma’Khia Bryant. For so many others lost to us forever. Call or email your Members of Congress and demand The BREATHE Act.

Movement 4 Black Lives’ BREATHE Act calls for divesting federal funds from policing and incarceration, and investing those funds in community-driven safety initiatives, robust community-building, and holding our leaders accountable to their promises to support Black communities.

We must keep fighting for a system that actually addresses the needs of Black communities, and stop propping up a system that was designed to work exactly as it does right now.

Rest in power George Floyd and Ma’Khia Bryant.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and ask them if they agree that Black lives matter. Then, ask them to prove it: by sponsoring and passing The BREATHE Act.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to pass the For the People Act, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
