Demand Statehood for Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. has a population of approximately 700,000 people, giving the capital city a higher headcount than both Vermont and Wyoming. But unlike the residents of Vermont and Wyoming, who each have two Senators and one Representative in Congress, residents of D.C. have no voice at the federal level.

What’s more, D.C. is a plurality-Black city, meaning there’s a higher percentage (about 45%) of Black residents than any other race, making statehood a major civil rights issue.

Black votes matter. Sign here to demand Congress passes H.R.51 / S.51, granting statehood to Washington, D.C.

Republicans aren’t even denying the political games behind their opposition. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is on the record stating he doesn’t want D.C. (or Puerto Rico) to ever reach statehood simply because he doesn’t want more Democrats in Congress. It’s classic GOP voter suppression to silence voters of color.

Statehood for D.C. would give Congressional voice to hundreds of thousands of BIPOCs who deserve it every bit as much as any other American. The time to enfranchise the people of D.C. is NOW.

Add your name to tell Congress that granting statehood for Washington, D.C. is a major civil rights issue – pass H.R.51 / S.51!
