Today’s Action: Stop Trump’s reckless offshore drilling expansion!

When we hear “offshore drilling,” many of us think back to the horrific images of oil-drenched marine birds and dead dolphins in the aftermath of 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Others think forward to the looming consequences of global warming to coastal cities and already-marginalized communities, brought on by the continued burning of fossil fuels.

But not Donald Trump. No, our president thinks about making his friends and Republican supporters rich(er), and he’s trying to do just that by opening US waters to an unprecedented level of oil drilling.

But we can stop him. The Department of the Interior has issued a 60-day period for public comment: submit yours, saying NO to Trump’s plan to threaten our planet and coasts with virtually unlimited offshore drilling.

As his final safeguard before leaving office, President Obama issued a 5-year-plan to limit drilling in certain fragile waters, and implemented permanent protection for nearly 120 million acres of shores, including 98% of the US-controlled Arctic Ocean.

But the Trump Administration is planning to throw open the doors for oil drilling in nearly all US waters, including Obama-protected areas. The potential environmental damage is almost unimaginable – which is why the Department of the Interior needs to hear from us.
