Today’s Action: We must learn from Texas…pass the Green New Deal!

In an outrageous attempt to save face over the disastrous winter storm which has left millions out of power in freezing temperatures, Texas Governor Greg Abbott blamed the mass electricity outages on the Green New Deal. Which was ridiculous given that the Green New Deal hasn’t been passed and the vast majority of power outages came from dirty fossil fuels. It was a thinly-veiled attempt to save face by passing the buck to Democrats.

The reality is that Texas’s power grid has been privatized for profit, with heavy investments in gas and coal, and those companies are not financially incentivized to prepare for emergency scenarios. And the breakdown of the state’s green energy sources was due to the GOP’s lack of investment in the equipment that keeps wind turbines going in cold weather…which other states have invested in, and successfully use all winter long.

Thanks to climate change, greater storms are in Texas’ future. And Texas’ fossil fuel reliance will contribute heavily to its own demise. But the Green New Deal pays for the investment in green energy needed to keep Texans warm all winter long.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand the Green New Deal – the Texas freeze proves we need investment in green energy more than ever before!

The Green New Deal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition the United States to 100% renewable energy sources and net-zero carbon emissions in a decade. And it goes beyond that: creating millions of high-wage green-energy jobs, updating infrastructure and restoring forests, and addressing social inequalities with universal healthcare, affordable housing, and clean air and water.

It’s an incredible package that the entire planet and all her inhabitants need to survive. But although President Biden is better on climate change than any other president so far, he also needs a push to address climate change with the real urgency it deserves. Biden’s plan doesn’t get us to net-zero carbon emissions until 2050…and we simply can’t wait that long.

Case in point: Texas.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them the Texas storm makes the clear case for the Green New Deal. Americans can’t wait until 2050 to combat climate change.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition thanking AOC and President Biden for helping Texans in need while their own state leaders abandoned them, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
