Today’s Action: Tell Congress to oppose further arms deals with Saudi Arabia

Washington Post journalist and permanent American resident Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi government agents in the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul earlier this month. Khashoggi had a history of speaking out against the human rights atrocities committed by the Saudi government, and moved to the United States in 2017. Although the Saudi government claims the agents were acting “rogue,” growing evidence shows otherwise.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the UAE continue their airstrikes over Yemen, where 13 million now face starvation due to intentional warfare tactics by the Saudi government – a Yemeni child under five dies every ten minutes. And the US provides the weapons and air-strike-support to Saudi Arabia, despite never being authorized by Congress or debated by the public.

And Trump? On the news of Khashoggi’s murder by the Saudi regime, Trump has stated he wants our relationship with Saudi Arabia to remain firm. In other words: he wants to keep selling the weapons that have killed thousands…and that death toll is going to rise to millions unless we work fast to cut off the weapons source.

Call or email your members of Congress and demand they cease all arms deals with Saudi Arabia, and hold the Saudi regime accountable for their horrific actions in Yemen.

This past spring, Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Chris Murphy (D-CT) introduced a resolution to withdraw our unauthorized military support. But most Senate Republicans, joined by ten Democrats, voted to shove it under the rug without debate.

Shameful.

Our Constitution gives only Congress the power to declare war. And yet, without even seeking approval, the US continues to participate in a war that has left more than 10,000 civilians dead, 40,000 wounded, fifteen million without access to clean water, and nearly 60 percent of the population with no reliable access to food.

Our participation in this crisis is unconscionable and inhumane, and it needs to stop now.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your members of Congress and tell them to call for an end of all U.S. involvement in Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen. Remind them 13 million lives are at stake.
