Today’s Action: Washington, D.C. is taxation without representation!

This week, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing on statehood for Washington, D.C. And the case is incredibly clear: the 712,000 residents of D.C. deserve the same say in Congress as every other person in the United States.

D.C. pays more in federal taxes per capita than any state in the country – and has populations higher than Wyoming and Vermont –  but has no voting representation in Congress, and thus no say in how those taxes are used.

And, D.C. has a lack of representation in another big way: the population of the city is 45% Black, which would make it the first plurality-Black state in the nation. The fact that Congressional representation has been long-denied is a major civil rights issue.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand they move forward with statehood for Washington, D.C. If your MOCs have already co-sponsored (H.R. 51/S. 51), thank them and urge them to let nothing (including the filibuster) get in the way of its passage!

Republicans are very clear about why they don’t want D.C. (and Puerto Rico) statehood succeeding: because it would chip away at their voting power in the Senate. And (when they think the microphone is turned off), they’re afraid of a thriving Black city having a say in their politics.

Statehood for D.C. would give Congressional voice to hundreds of thousands of BIPOCs who deserve it every bit as much as any other American. The time to enfranchise the people of D.C. is NOW.

Black votes matter. Call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to support statehood for Washington, D.C. If your MOCs have already co-sponsored (H.R. 51/S. 51), thank them and encourage them to fight hard for this issue.

After we get our final ten caucus members on board in the Senate, we still have the filibuster to face. Tell your Senators the right to representation is so much more important than an undemocratic, Jim Crow era procedural trick. It’s time to abolish the filibuster.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition telling Congress to pass the For the People Act, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
