Today’s Action: Today is BREATHE Day

The past few months have pushed into the spotlight the unacceptable structures of institutionalized racism in our law enforcement and justice system. Nationwide protests over the murder of George Floyd and other Black lives lost to police brutality have sustained to the present moment, as we continue to take action for Breonna Taylor in the wake of Kentucky’s failure to deliver justice last week.

Movement 4 Black Lives, a coalition of over 150 organizations fighting for the divestment of law enforcement funding into community-driven resources to improve the lives of Black people, has created the BREATHE Act…and today is BREATHE Day to push the Act forward into Congress.

Call or email your Members of Congress and urge them to introduce and co-sponsor the BREATHE Act – we want to see it passed in the next session!

Then, choose one of the four BREATHE Act actions to take today: educating your community, posting on social media, filming a “love letter,” or activating local officials. Click here for more info on each!

The BREATHE Act calls for divesting federal funds from policing and incarceration, investing in community-driven safety initiatives, allocating funds for community building, and holding our leaders accountable. It’s a culmination of the cries for justice that we have seen across the country in the past few months since George Floyd’s murder…and for decades before his death.

The continued, systemic police brutality against Black people in our country is inhumane, unjust, and intentionally designed to work this way. To overcome it, we must demand sweeping change in how our legal and law enforcement systems are structured and funded at the cost of Black lives.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand their support of the BREATHE Act – it still needs to be introduced to Congress! Next, participate in BREATHE Day by spreading the word via one (or more) of the four actions on the M4BL website!
