Today’s Action: Protect Rod Rosenstein from the Freedom Caucus

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein hasn’t received quite as much media attention as the man he’s charged with overseeing, Special Counsel Robert Mueller. But his position is vital in the ongoing Russian collusion investigation as ‘the one who could fire Mueller, but hasn’t.’

Rosenstein is a lifelong Republican who has weathered Trump’s demands, threats, and intimidations to end the investigation. And because of his resistance, members of the House Freedom Party Caucus (aka Tea Party members in the House of Representatives), who don’t like the way Rosenstein has stood up to their boss, are calling for Rosenstein’s impeachment.

The issue has been pushed to the fall when the House returns from recess. But we must work now to ensure the House protects Rosenstein, and thus the Trump-Russia investigation.

Call or email your Representative and demand they protect Rosenstein and the Russia investigation, rejecting impeachment or a contempt resolution which would impede Rosenstein and Mueller.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) stood firm against impeachment…but he agreed to revisit a “contempt of Congress resolution” this fall, a consolation prize (or perhaps the actual goal) for the Freedom Caucus. A contempt resolution could be just as damaging to Rosenstein and the autonomy of the Trump-Russia investigation.

Let’s be clear: Rosenstein is no liberal hero as his history on progressive issues makes clear. But right now, we need him to carry on, unobstructed, so that Mueller may do the same. Which is exactly what the Freedom Caucus is hoping to change.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Representatives and urge them to stand up against threats to Rosenstein and the Russia investigation. Tell them to reject calls for impeachment or a contempt resolution.
