Trump’s latest sabotage of the Affordable Care Act is a pretty reprehensible one: allowing short-term “junk” insurance plans on the insurance market side-by-side with the Obama-approved and consumer-friendly policies. Although these plans are meant to last three months maximum, Trump has expanded them to be renewable for up to three years.
Junk insurance plans often have impossibly high deductibles, no prescription drug coverage, and do not cover any hospitalization…meaning an unsuspecting consumer may purchase the plan, only to find themselves crippled by medical debt at the first sign of health issues. Equally bad, these plans are not subject to Obama’s heralded protections for discrimination against pre-existing conditions.
Senate Democrats are rallying to block Trump’s new rules and the vote is this week.
Call or email your Senators and demand they support S.J.Res.52, using a Congressional Review Act (CRA) to block Trump’s junk healthcare policies that prey on unsuspecting consumers.
After failing to overturn the Affordable Care Act, Trump’s tactic has since been to weaken it from within. The inclusion of junk insurance policies as long-term healthcare plans pulls healthy consumers away from standard plans, leaving the marketplace with a higher ratio of elderly and unhealthy individuals. This, in turn, drives up premiums for everyone still using the ACA marketplace to purchase insurance.
The American people have voted time and time again to maintain the ACA, showing stable, accessible healthcare is a bipartisan desire. Our Senators on both sides of the aisle need another reminder from us that the destruction of the ACA is not on our agenda – and short-term junk insurance policies are not a long-term solution.
Don’t delay, the vote is this week! Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and tell them to support S.J.Res.52, and use a Congressional Review Act to prevent Trump from flooding the health insurance market with junk insurance plans.
