Today’s Action: Fight for affordable housing in Biden’s recovery plan!
Well into our second year of the pandemic and facing record job loss, more than 1 in 7 adult renters are still not caught up on their rent – more than 10 million households – including 20% of renters with children. When eviction moratoriums end on June 30th, millions of families may find themselves homeless. Access to affordable housing is a critical necessity in Biden’s recovery plan.
The American Jobs Plan does include some major good housing points, including over $200 billion to retrofit homes for green energy, and funding for repairing public housing. But (you guessed it) it could be even better at this crucial stage of recovery, and we’re joining the Congressional Progressive Caucus in calling for much more!
Call or email your Members of Congress and demand they fight for affordable housing for struggling families in Biden’s recovery plan, by:
- Guaranteeing housing choice vouchers for all eligible Americans (extremely low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled) to rent safe and sanitary housing on the private market
-
- Guarantee spending on housing choice vouchers every year by making it mandatory instead of discretionary
- Invest $70 billion in low-income housing to address badly needed repairs and maintenance
- Eliminate “The Faircloth Amendment” which currently blocks housing authorities from maintaining more public housing units than they had in 1999…which is insane, but true.
Homelessness and housing insecurity was a major problem in this country before a global pandemic wiped out millions of jobs. Our government has an opportunity to tackle both the “before” and “after” at once – let’s push them to do the right thing.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to invest in affordable housing options to address the crippling housing insecurity in which this pandemic has left millions of Americans.
