Today’s Action: Tell the Senate to pass the HEROES Act

This week, Trump held one of his more bizarre news conferences (which…we know is saying something), a rambling 30-minute improvised speech declaring “victory” over the pandemic and unemployment crisis (still at 13.3%, and higher for Black Americans), and saying this economic news even made it a great day for George Floyd…who was murdered by police.

We are so, so far from a “victory,” and in fact won’t ever “win” as we cannot bring back those lost to this virus. Over 113,000 Americans gone and rising, with fresh spikes in infection rates as economies reopen and a worse second wave predicted. Meanwhile, our elections continue to suffer – Georgia’s primary this week suffered a complete meltdown, particularly and almost certainly intentionally for Black voters.

We don’t need a phony victory speech. We need actual support from the federal government.

The House has passed the HEROES Act, legislation that will put $3 trillion into personal financial support, voting protections, free testing and treatment for all, and economic stimulation. But the bill is stalled in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to move forward.

The Senate cannot delay any longer. Call or email your Senators and tell them to pass the HEROES Act.

The Democrats’ plan will provide $1 trillion in funding for state and local governments, a second stimulus check for households (including immigrants), funding for the United States Postal Service, moratoriums on evictions, and $200 billion in hazard pay for essential workers. It also includes $3.6 billion to fund a national option to vote-by-mail and boosted in-person safety measures for this November’s election.

It’s vitally important that the Senate move forward on these lifesaving and economy-boosting measures literally as soon as possible. The HEROES Act is a strong negotiating tool for Democrats in the Senate, and it’s just as important that Dems know we have their backs as it is for Republicans to hear how badly we need the support.

Tell your Senators that we can’t afford to wait. The Senate must pass the HEROES Act because Americans need these actions to survive this crisis. Do it today!
