Today’s Action: Keep up the pressure on family reunification
The Trump Administration blew through a court-ordered deadline of July 11 to reunify the ~100 children under 5 separated from their parents through Trump’s Zero Tolerance immigration policy. They face a second court-ordered deadline of July 26 for the remaining 2,900 older children who still are not with their parents.
It’s perfectly clear now that the Trump Administration never had a plan or care for reuniting any of the children they ripped from the arms of asylum-seeking parents — they’re expected to fail the July 26 deadline by a long-shot as they reluctantly scramble to create a plan. And there’s little recourse the court that ordered the deadline can take for this failure, beyond extending the date further into the future.
Which is why today’s action is taking things into our own hands: getting our state Governors – and ourselves – involved.
Live in Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Harlingen, Phoenix, Los Angeles, New York, or Washington, D.C.? Serve as a volunteer Child Advocate (no legal experience required, just a caring heart).
With Trump willfully dragging his feet, it’s up to us to keep up the momentum and fight against the unimaginable trauma these children face. Already, some toddlers have been separated for so long that they no longer recognize their parents.
The pressure we’ve placed on the GOP has worked, forcing Trump into several policy changes. But there’s still so much more to go — we must not give up on these children or any of the thousands of adult asylum seekers caught in the snare of the zero tolerance policy.
If you live in Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Harlingen, Phoenix, Los Angeles, New York, or Washington, D.C., volunteer as a Child Advocate — no experience required.
PS: Mark your calendar for a national day of action on July 28th.
