Today’s Action: Protect ICE detainees from COVID-19

While many households have now instituted a new ritual of frequent and lengthy handwashing and surface wipedowns, immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement are facing an entirely different situation in the face of COVID-19. Detainees at a facility in New Jersey are now on a hunger strike to protest the abysmal lack of sanitary protections our government has provided.

Detainees are reportedly receiving one single bar of soap a week, to cover both hand washing and bathing, and anything more comes out of their own pockets for $1.70/bar. No laundry, no hand sanitizer, and no ability to physically distance in the crowded facilities with over 100 people in a single room. No medical assistance provided, even with reported fevers…it’s a COVID-19 nightmare and it’s very much a waking reality for thousands of immigrants.

Call or email your Members of Congress AND your State Governor and urge them to push for the closing of ICE facilities during the COVID-19 crisis, as our government has proven they cannot protect immigrants under the current conditions.

“Well, you’re going to have to die of something.” That’s the callous attitude immigrants are facing from their guards at ICE detention centers as they fight to keep themselves safe from COVID-19 under dire conditions.

We’ve already shared many actions for closing the ICE detention centers, period, and will again because they sadly remain in vast numbers in nearly every state in the nation. But now, COVID-19 may literally turn every single facility into death camps within days if they are not immediately shut down and the immigrants released to seek safer, more sanitary shelter.

Congress is headed into a long recess, so we’ve got to tackle this from multiple angles. Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress, then ask your Governor to take action at the state level to shut down ICE detention centers in the face of COVID-19, since ICE has failed to responsibly consider for detainee health during this crisis (or ever).
