Today’s Action: Impeachment August

The majority of House Democrats now favor beginning impeachment proceedings against Trump and August Recess is the perfect opportunity for some face-time demands! Check out where your Rep stands.

Neither we nor Congress have seen the full, unredacted report yet – and Congress’s investigations into Trump’s wrongdoings continue to be obstructed by the subject of the inquiry himself. At what point are our “undecided” and “against” leaders going to realize that it’s time to demand justice?

Answer: when we say so, and we’re saying so now. It’s Impeachment August, and our Reps are home for the rest of the summer.

Call or email your Representative to request an in-person meeting or inquire about a public town hall. Tell them it is time to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump for his repeated obstruction of justice and urge them to cosponsor H.Res.257.

Here’s what we now know:

  • The Mueller report explicitly “does not exonerate” Trump on the crime of obstruction of justice. In fact, Mueller has repeated: “If we had confidence that the President clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.”
  • The Special Counsel declined to charge Trump not due to a lack of evidence but because, in Mueller’s words, “under longstanding department policy, a president cannot be charged with a federal crime while he is in office.”
  • Mueller’s report details a Russian attack on the 2016 election to help Trump, and that Trump and members of his team welcomed and often sought the help in more than 100 contacts between the campaign and Russian agents.
  • In the aftermath, Trump used the power of his elected office to cover up the facts and obstruct the investigation on at least ten separate occasions detailed in the report.
  • Trump and his cronies have flouted the law almost daily since the report’s release, rejecting Congress’s constitutional obligation to provide oversight of the president, refusing to comply with subpoenas and provide basic documents.

Far from an exoneration, the Mueller report is an impeachment referral to Congress. Mueller made that clear in his lone press conference, stating as he wrote that “the Constitution requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting President of wrongdoing.”

That process is impeachment.

A point Mueller made no less clear in his report, writing, “The conclusion that Congress may apply obstruction laws to the President’s corrupt exercise of the powers of office accords with our constitutional system of checks and balances and the principle that no person is above the law.”

No President should have the authority and precedent to sabotage an examination of their own criminal activity. If Congress doesn’t take a stand here and now, what type of authoritarianism do we face in our near future?

In the United States, no one is above the law. Not even the president. The time to impeach is now.

Email or call your Representatives to request an in-person meeting or town hall dates, and tell them to move fast for impeachment. Tell them to cosponsor Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s H.Res.257 (“Inquiring whether the House of Representatives should impeach Donald John Trump”) to initiate proceedings. Need help planning your meeting? Impeachment August has extra resources!
