Today’s Action: Tell Congress to give tax penalties to companies that pay less than a $15 minimum wage!

House Democrats have passed a $15/hour federal minimum wage as part of the upcoming stimulus package. Senate Democrats plan to send the entire stimulus package through a process known as budget reconciliation, which allows them to bypass the Jim Crow filibuster and GOP obstruction with a simple majority.

However, the $15/hour wage increase has been blocked by the Senate parliamentarian. Happily, there’s another route forward…

Call or email your Members of Congress to demand they include the Sanders/Wyden Amendment – which penalizes companies that do not raise their minimum wage to $15/hour – in the upcoming stimulus package!

Passing the $15/hour increase would directly or indirectly boost paychecks for 40 million workers, particularly women of color, single mothers, and two-thirds of those currently living in poverty. And because lower-income workers tend to spend their extra wages, this bill would also provide immediate economic stimulus and job growth.

The vast majority of Americans support the $15/hour minimum wage…and that was before the pandemic made rich people richer and poor people poorer. Now, we’re facing record-high amounts of rent-owed and miles-long lines at food banks. A year into COVID, it’s never been clearer that we need to treat our workers – the backbone of our economy – much better.

Most of our elected leaders are among the wealthiest people in the country. We can’t let a handful of millionaires hold back a life-changing policy for millions of America’s hardest workers.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to include the Sanders/Wyden Amendment in the stimulus package. American workers need and deserve $15/hour!
