9/11: End our endless wars

It’s September 11. We’d like to reflect on the 2,977 lives lost on this day in 2001, as well as the 800,000 lives extinguished and 37-59 million people displaced from their homes in post-9/11 wars in South and West Asia. A significant portion of these post-9/11 numbers are a result of the United States’ foreign interference, whether through direct warfare or arms sales, and they also do not include our action in Africa. We have witnessed and voted in tragedy upon tragedy that we must now willingly face and acknowledge.

Democrats and Republicans alike are accountable for our wars. We have watched our domestic Democratic champions repeatedly vote to increase Defense spending each year. We allowed a beloved Democratic president to add arenas of war using the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), and increase droning and civilian deaths, without significant outcry. And our methods of distinguishing civilians from “opposition fighters” are questionable, while these overall death toll estimates are conservative, casting a further veil of inhumanity over the cold statistics.

Call or email your Members of Congress (and any candidates campaigning to replace your reps) and tell them you want to see a repeal of the AUMF in the 117th Congress, and a 10% decrease in Defense spending. End our endless war.

This action isn’t one that’s going to be tackled with our current president, Senate, OR our Democratic-led House. But the progressive rallying cry for dramatic change in our global warfare is growing each year…and it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Our leaders shouldn’t just hear from us when the Defense budget is up for a vote – they need to hear from us consistently and repeatedly. For those living in U.S. arenas of war, this is an urgent action, even though most of our daily lives carry on unaffected by their struggles.

As a party, we hold strong responsibility for the state of the world, and there is no time like today to begin working toward a better future without endless war. We can honor those who died on this day by taking action to prevent further loss.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and campaigning candidates, and tell them repealing the AUMF and decreasing Defense spending by 10% in the 117th Congress is a high priority for you.
