Today’s Action: Overcome Mitch McConnell’s obstruction and fight for pandemic relief

Republicans showed little sign yesterday that they could hear the shouts and pleas from their desperate constituents to provide any real pandemic support during what Biden called the “very dark winter” ahead of us. And more specifically: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could not.

Because while many Republicans are willing to negotiate, McConnell has single-handedly tanked negotiation efforts unless this upcoming package wipes away lawsuits that hold negligent corporations (rightly) responsible for pandemic-related worker injury or death.

We must pressure Republicans hard to lean on McConnell to release his anti-worker corporation shields and pass the relief bill we really need.

Call or email your Senators and demand comprehensive pandemic relief. We need: stimulus checks for families, strong state/local funding, boosted unemployment benefits, eviction protections and rent/mortgage relief, student loan relief…and no liability protections for irresponsible corporations.

And beyond McConnell’s obstruction, the current bill still needs big improvements. Where we’re at now…

  • No stimulus checks. Republicans are refusing to fund another round of $1,200 aid to struggling families
  • A reduction of funding to states, localities, and tribal governments, $160 billion down from the $1 trillion marker in the Democrats’ HEROES Act…with part of that pitiful $160 billion intended to fund bloated law enforcement budgets

  • Unemployment insurance has been cut from the previous $600/week to $300/week, despite abysmally high unemployment numbers

  • Includes liability protections for corporations to continue pushing unsafe working conditions without fear of legal retribution from their at-risk employees

But the deal isn’t done and the vote hasn’t happened yet. This package can be much better.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand robust pandemic funding, not a liability-free handout to irresponsible corporations who have killed their workers. Be specific – share what you or your family/community members specifically need.
