Today’s Action: Demand an independent commission for Puerto Rico

Just over one year ago, Puerto Rico faced Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm that struck just two weeks after the equally strong Hurricane Irma. Over half a million homes destroyed, it took 5 months to restore water services and nearly 11 months to restore power across the island, and some communities continue to struggle along on generators.

The Trump regime has maintained the official death count from the two hurricanes to be 64 lives. But a recent Harvard University study has found that the storms combined killed 4,645 people, over 70 times Trump’s official number.

We must ask why there is no explanation for the administration’s refusal to acknowledge the deaths of thousands of Americans, how the artificial deflation affected Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) response — and how many lives could have been saved with appropriate federal support. That’s why members of Congress are calling for an independent commission of federal response to Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

Call or email your members of Congress and demand they support the National Commission of the Federal Response to Natural Disasters in Puerto Rico Act of 2018. The bills are S. 3076 for Senate and H.R. 6103 for House.

Puerto Ricans are American citizens, every bit as deserving of federal support and protection as residents of the 50 states. But Trump has blanket-denied all consequences of the storm and his inaction in the aftermath, literally negating 3000 American lives lost as a liberal conspiracy. This outrageous disregard is the epitome of Trump’s self-preservation and unmitigated lies combined with the racist and imperialist attitudes that Puerto Ricans have long suffered under.

We cannot bring back those thousands of lives. But we can honor their memory and do our absolute best to ensure no American president so horrifically neglects Puerto Rico in her time of need ever again.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your members of Congress and tell them to support the National Commission of the Federal Response to Natural Disasters in Puerto Rico Act of 2018. The bills are S. 3076 for Senate and H.R. 6103 for House.

Another storm is inevitable — but preventing the neglect that leads to catastrophic loss of lives is in our hands.
