Today’s Action: Eliminate the undemocratic filibuster!

Ahhh, the filibuster. From our high school history class days, this word may elicit antiquated images of old men in coat tails (or Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope in roller skates), passionately delaying legislation by refusing to vacate the podium during open debate.

But it’s not like that anymore. Ending debate and officially advancing most legislation to a final vote in the Senate requires 60 votes. So, the minority party may simply vote against ending debate – thereby blocking legislation that would otherwise pass with a simple majority. No long speeches into the night; the minority has nearly the same power as the majority, thanks to the filibuster.

If Democrats in Congress want to achieve any of their agenda – and if anyone wants to adhere to the original intent of Congress’ simple majority-rule, as laid out by the Constitution – we must give power back to the majority by eliminating the filibuster.

Call or email your Senators TODAY and demand they support the end of the filibuster, the most undemocratic tool of our democracy. This call is time-sensitive as Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell finalize procedural agreements!

Need more convincing? The filibuster’s past and present is racist. It has been used countless times since the early 20th-century to block major pieces of civil rights legislation, and extend the life of horrific Jim Crow laws — prompting Rep. Ayanna Pressley to accurately dub it “the Jim Crow Filibuster.” And remember our fight for Dreamers with Trump? That would have been unnecessary, if the GOP hadn’t used the filibuster to block The Dream Act in 2010. President Obama has said the filibuster made it impossible for him to effectively govern.

We have less than two years before voters have another say on the makeup of Congress. With Democrats in the majority, it is essential that they are actually able to prove their intent to help all Americans. If the GOP has minority rule to block real and effective change, we’ll be facing an easy loss and return to GOP control in 2023.

The filibuster HAS to go – and quickly.

Email or call your Democratic Senators TODAY and tell them that ending the filibuster is the only way forward for our party and our country. Tell your Republican Senators that the filibuster is undemocratic and unsupported by the Constitution.
