Today’s Action: Buy local/small business this holiday season!
The holiday season is officially here…it’s Black Friday. And this year, more than ever before, small and local businesses around the country are depending on a strong holiday season to survive to the next year.
The pandemic has crippled – or shuttered – countless independent businesses. Meanwhile, between March and June 2020, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos’ personal wealth rose by about $48 billion dollars. And Alice, Jim, and Rob Walton (co-owners of Walmart) have seen their fortunes rise by $14.4 billion between March and September 2020. $14.4 billion each.
We get it – we’re pushing people to stay home and stay safe, and online shopping is a good way to do that! However, many small businesses have now had time to create their own safe shopping options, and they’ll need progressive people who see the value and benefit of a strong local, independent, non-corporate economy to make an extra effort this season.
Support Amazon workers in the largest international labor action — happening in at least 15 countries — by committing to a small/local business holiday gift plan this year! Investigate which small and/or local businesses have online/phone/social-distanced purchase options and keep safe while you boost local retail!
Many brick-and-mortar small businesses have adapted to the pandemic, creating safe curbside pickup options for phone and internet orders. And, others have moved online – or were online well before the shutdowns.
What’s even better: shopping small/local businesses instead of massive corporations allow you to spend your gift budgets at shops more likely to be owned by women/people of color, and directly contribute to the livelihoods of families more likely to be struggling during this pandemic.
Write out your holiday gifting list, and then investigate how you can commit to local and/or small business shopping this year while staying safe. Many local businesses now are fully equipped for the pandemic and ready to help you find that perfect gift.
