Today’s Action: Pass the No Federal Funds for Public Charge Act

The Trump Administration (boy, these words never follow with good news) made a rule change this past fall which penalizes immigrants applying for visas and green cards if they show signs they may be a “public charge.”

In other words, if an immigrant has ever used Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP, aka food stamps) or Medicaid/CHIP (children’s healthcare), they are much more likely to be denied permanent residency in our country. And although the change was challenged, the Supreme Court has just allowed it to go forward in a 5-4 vote.

This rule will have critical and devastating consequences: millions of immigrants, and many with children, may choose to forego badly-needed assistance on basic necessities like food, housing, and healthcare access, fearing future consequences. Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA-27) has introduced H.R. 3222 to block Trump’s cruel rule by denying him the funds needed to implement the change.

Call or email your Representative and tell them to cosponsor and pass H.R. 3222, the No Federal Funds for Public Charge Act. Trump must not be allowed to use basic needs as blackmail against immigrants seeking visas and green cards. If they have already co-sponsored, thank them and urge them to keep pushing.

The effects of this change are projected to extend far beyond those immigrants it would actually impact. Advocates expect many to skip applying for benefits they’re entitled to, even if they aren’t affected by this rule change, out of confusion and fear – including permanent residents and citizens.

For example, a recent study found that 14.7% of adults in families where each member holds a green card still chose not to apply for social services – out of fear of their future green card status.

The idea is also based on a deeply flawed ideology that immigrants come here to leech off the system. The truth is, while some immigrants need assistance with healthcare, housing, and food at some point, the vast majority move off assistance in a short time to not only be productive assets in our society but creating a huge net gain for America’s financial prospects.

This continued fear-mongering is another Trump step toward creating a group of second-class citizens of color in our country and it absolutely must be stopped – starting with blocking the cash needed to make it happen.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Representative and tell them to cosponsor and pass H.R. 3222, the No Federal Funds for Public Charge Act, to cut off Trump’s funding for implementing his new public charge rule. If they have already co-sponsored, tell them you approve.
