Today’s Action: Tell your State to protect a woman’s right to choose
In women’s rights news: Ohio has just passed one of the most rigid anti-choice laws we’ve seen yet, banning abortion at the sound of fetal heartbeat, roughly six weeks into pregnancy.
Aside from the obvious injustice of the state telling a woman what she can and can’t do with her body, many women do not even realize they are pregnant at the six-week mark. And for those who do realize before the cut-off, this law gives impossibly little time to emotionally process and arrange (logistically and financially) for the procedure. This law is so severe that it may as well tell Ohio women they simply don’t have a choice, which is, frankly the GOP’s agenda.
Call or email your State Governor and State Representatives. Tell them you support strong pro-choice abortion laws that adhere to Roe v. Wade and keep the decision where it belongs: with the woman.
The Ohio law is unconstitutional and will be fought in court…which is also GOP’s agenda. Roe v. Wade allows abortions through the 24-week mark, and this law is the latest in a string of right-wing attempts to challenge it in the Supreme Court. (In Texas, lawmakers are considering a bill that would make having an abortion punishable by death, though it’s not expected to pass.)
With a right-leaning SCOTUS, we can’t just depend on them to uphold Roe and a woman’s right to choose. That’s why action must happen at the State level to stop harmful legislation from passing in the first place.
Email or call your State Governor and State Representatives and tell them what you want to see: state law that firmly supports and adheres to the guidelines of Roe v Wade and a woman’s right to choose.
