Today’s Action: Ensure Mueller’s findings are made public
Under our current law, neither Congress nor the American public have the guaranteed right to read the results of the Russia investigation. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, upon completion of the examination into the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia, only has orders to hand his report over to the Attorney General.
But there’s a bipartisan effort in the Senate to fix this. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) have introduced the Special Counsel Transparency Act, which would instead require Mueller to submit his report to Congress and the public for full viewing.
The Senate will vote later this month on Trump’s nomination for Attorney General, William Barr. If confirmed (we’re fighting this too), Barr would be Mueller’s new boss. But during his confirmation hearings, Barr refused to commit to releasing Mueller’s report — which means, on Trump’s orders, the investigation could be locked away indefinitely.
With Barr choosing his path as a Trump crony, we need this bill in place. Sen. Blumenthal said it best: “A Special Counsel is appointed only in very rare serious circumstances involving grave violations of public trust. The public has a right and need to know the facts of such betrayals of public trust.”
