Today’s Action: Stop Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao from corruptly influencing Mitch McConnell’s re-election
As with all high-ranking government officials, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao vowed she would disclose and eliminate all personal financial conflicts of interest upon entering office. Like Trump, she did neither. Where to begin…
Chao’s spouse is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (you’ve heard of him). Which is why it was extra suspicious when Chao designated a special liaison from her office to Kentucky, garnering $78 million in federal grant money to benefit their home state during McConnell’s reelection…
Chao’s family owns a large shipping business, which operates primarily in China (hint: shipping falls under ‘transportation’ and is thus a huge conflict of interest). Although she is not technically an employee, the lion’s share of Chao and McConnell’s riches is thanks to personal gifts from the family members who own it. Meanwhile, Chao acts as an *unofficial* representative of the company, using her celebrity to boost the company’s business, and trying to use federal resources to incorporate her family into official travel — even including members of the family business in government meetings. The conflicts and ethical issues of a recent trip to China were so deep that the trip was ultimately canceled.
Chao isn’t just corrupt when it comes to her family and husband. After promising to liquidate all stock in conflict areas, Chao…didn’t…until called out by the Wall Street Journal, at which point she cashed out on Vulcan stock (a paving-materials company that directly benefits from federal infrastructure contracts) and earned an additional $50,000 on the sale by delaying…
And then there’s the way she’s handled the American shipping industry vs her family business: proposing massive cuts to American shipping programs, identical to those that her own family personally supports in China. Her proposal was drastic even Congressional Republicans joined Democrats in rejecting them.
Conflict much?
