Today’s Action: Demand Congress act to protect Dreamers ahead of tomorrow’s vote
It’s been just two weeks since Republican obstinance caused the first government shutdown under single party government control ever, and Republicans have until tomorrow to figure out how to keep things from closing down a second time under their watch.
What will happen is anybody’s guess. The House has passed another irresponsible short-term funding bill, while there’s talk in the Senate of reaching a compromise on a real two-year deal, and Trump, for his part, is threatening to blow up the whole thing, saying that he’d “love to see a shutdown.”
But absent from the conversation is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) promise of protection for Dreamers, who face deportation beginning March 6.
This is unacceptable.
Let’s remember that these 800,000 young people, who were brought to the United States as children and have always played by the rules, were living securely as responsible members of our communities before Trump unilaterally revoked their status for no reason but bigotry.
Dreamers have the support of three-quarters of the American public — including a majority of Republicans — but until McConnell holds a vote on a Dream Act, they must live with threat of deportation beginning next month.
This delay is in defiance of the people’s will, and it’s as irresponsible as it is heartless.
Enough games, enough distractions. Lives and livelihoods will be lost if Congress does not act soon to protect Dreamers. Let your Member of Congress know that if they don’t do what is right, their jobs will be lost too.
PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition calling for the media to call Trump’s lies lies, and join the vast majority of Americans demanding Congress protect Dreamers NOW!
