Today’s Action: Save the United States Postal Service

In the wake of COVID-19, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is suffering badly. In fact, with the severe drop in mail during the outbreak, it’s running out of money fast. Many offices have reduced hours and some may shut down entirely. Other recent policies, put in place by Trump appointee/cronie Louis DeJoy, have further slowed delivery time. This is devastating news for a country with a national election in three months.

But Congressional Republicans want to keep it that way, as part of a thinly-veiled voter suppression strategy. And Trump’s unfounded personal vendetta against USPS aligns nicely with longtime Republican interest in privatizing (selling to the highest bidder) the postal service.

USPS needs additional funding NOW so that every mail-in ballot is received and counted this November.

Call (202.224.3121) or email your Members of Congress and demand $25 billion in emergency funding for the United States Postal Service in the upcoming pandemic stimulus package. BONUS: visit and buy a few packets of forever stamps (which don’t expire) to infuse the postal service with much-needed cash NOW (they’ll deliver to your mailbox)!

It’s not just “regular” mail that goes through the postal service – those who receive prescription medication delivery and many small businesses depend heavily on USPS, in and outside of pandemics.

And the USPS has a workforce of 600,000, including 100,000 veterans. As essential workers, they’re seeing the life-threatening effects of the virus, with at least 72 fatalities and 5600+ positive tests. Trump’s refusal to fund their livelihoods is criminal, particularly in the face of his insistence on funding large corporations that didn’t save up for hard times.

The United States Postal Service is mandated by the Constitution, and Congress and Trump must be held accountable to their duties to uphold and protect it.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to provide $25 billion of emergency funding for USPS in the upcoming relief package. If you can, help out USPS now by buying several packets of forever stamps for your mail needs over the next few months (they’ll deliver to you)!
