Today’s Action: Save Medicaid from Trump’s Sabotage
In his latest attempt to snatch health coverage away from working Americans, Trump issued guidance to states last week allowing them to drop Medicaid recipients unless they have a job, are enrolled in school, or participate in other approved “community engagement” activities.
Already, Kentucky’s Republican Governor Matt Bevin has issued work requirements that would deny potentially life-saving healthcare to people who don’t meet his work requirements. In Kentucky alone, 95,000 low-income recipients will be dropped within five years…and nine states (all red except one) are expected to follow Kentucky’s dangerous formula — if we don’t stop them.
Medicaid is the final safety net for 68 million low-income families, pregnant women, elderly, and people with disabilities who:
- can’t work due to physical and mental health
- live in areas of high unemployment
- are single parents, often with no access to childcare
- are often employed, but can’t earn enough to rise above poverty levels.
By imposing work restrictions, Republicans aren’t just setting an arbitrary standard that most are unable to fulfill, they’re passing an abhorrent and misguided ‘moral’ judgment on 68 million people: that the low-income are lazy and poverty is the fault of the poor.
The truth is, American families are struggling to do the best they can in a country where the deck is stacked against working people by cruel policies like these.
