Today’s Action: Protect net neutrality at the state level
Earlier this year, we fought hard to protect net neutrality and a fair and open internet at the federal level, to keep us protected from telecom corporations censoring the web and raising prices for consumers. We lost that battle to Trump and his wealthy GOP telecom donors, though it was worth every bit of effort — and we are not done fighting.
We’ll certainly address net neutrality again with our next Democratic president in 2021, but there’s more to be done NOW. And that’s taking it to the states…because the courts have ruled in favor of statewide laws which protect consumers in the ways the federal government is refusing to.
Call or email your state representatives, and demand they sponsor legislation to ensure net neutrality in your state, including the following:
- Incentivize internet service providers that maintain net neutrality
- Refuse to do business with and/or deny benefits to internet service provides that won’t keep things neutral
With Trump’s lies and misinformation spreading like wildfire, particularly now as he refuses to cooperate with his own impeachment investigation, we can’t afford censored internet – especially because exploitation and manipulation of the internet is one of the big reasons we have President Trump right now.
Without net neutrality, every consumer loses as corporations gain the power to determine what we consume, a change that could have devastating consequences on independent voices and give Trump leverage to silence his critics.
Your state leaders likely haven’t heard as many requests for net neutrality as your Members of Congress…but it’s time to change that.
