Today’s Action: Economic security and corporate oversight during COVID-19

The last COVID-19 Congressional financial package was a bandaid – we knew this even as they were passing it. A single payout of $1,200 per adult is essentially the equivalent of a month’s salary on the federal minimum wage ($7.25)…and you know minimum wage isn’t actually a liveable wage in any part of the country.

As unemployment continues to climb steadily past 13%, and statewide stay-at-home mandates continue without end-dates, millions of Americans will be ready to spend their stimulus boost the second it arrives and already be in need of more assistance.

And then there are the jobs we’ll be returning to when this crisis does end. The stimulus package Congress passed to provide the single individual payout also included corporate support. But Republicans resisted calls to place any restrictions or oversight on nearly half a trillion dollars of bailout funds to large corporations…companies that are worried now because they spent their profits on stock buybacks instead of saving up for a rainy day.

Absolutely unacceptable and maddening. There will need to be another COVID-19 stimulus package, and we need big financial changes going forward AND retroactively.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand the following economic policies for individuals and corporations the next COVID-19 financial stimulus package:

  • Monthly cash payments to all individuals, including immigrants
  • No evictions, foreclosures, repossessions, and a moratorium on student loans during this crisis

  • Increase Social Security and SNAP, and provide Universal Sick Leave at 100% of wages

  • Require all corporations maintain their complete employee roster
  • Require a minimum wage of $15/hour for any corporation that takes bailout funds

  • Block bailout funds from being used for executive bonuses, stock buybacks, golden parachute payments, or dividends

  • No bailout funds for lobbying efforts and strict transparency on political spending

  • Require seats on corporate boards for workers and preserve all collective bargaining agreements
