Time is running out. Trump has proposed new changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which will drop coverage for two million Americans, and increase premiums and out-of-pocket costs for everyone else. Those changes are open for public comment through this coming Tuesday, February 19, and there are two in particular that need your voices to be saved.
One of Trump’s changes is eliminating auto-reenrollment, a vitally important consumer protection. Currently, if you forget to re-up your healthcare in November, auto-reenrollment means your plan assumes you’re continuing on with it. This feature is used by millions of Americans to stay insured without a hitch — because who hasn’t procrastinated on paperwork or lost that important piece of mail at least once in their life? For that matter, if you like a product you’re already getting, why should you have to do anything to keep it?
Trump’s second proposed change that needs massive vocal outcry is eliminating silver loading (strategically matching federal subsidies with low-income recipients) that many insurance companies used to keep ACA plans affordable after Trump’s first round of sabotage.
The two changes may not sound flashy, but gutting either would have monumental impact on the ACA — and Trump is going after both of them in his petty quest to undo Obama’s legacy achievement.
