Today’s Action: Demand permanent funding for the Violence Against Women Act
In the hullaballoo of the longest (and most unnecessary) government shutdown in American history, Congress skipped over a (very necessary) budget item: permanent funding for the Violence Against Women Act.
Every 16 hours in the United States, a woman is killed by her intimate partner with a gun. A staggering statistic that only scratches the surface of the variety and lethality in which millions of women face assault and brutality on a daily basis.
This landmark legislation was enacted in 1994, and in the last 25 years, has provided abused, battered, and stalked women with vital support networks: rape crisis centers, shelters, legal assistance, counseling, and more. Though violence against women remains far too common, in the years since VAWA’s inception, intimate partner violence has declined by an astounding 72% and sexual assault against women has dropped by nearly 60%.
Despite the remarkable success of VAWA, Republicans blocked the act from renewing in 2018, and now the VAWA has expired…which means Congress must act immediately to prevent another crisis of its own making.
