Barr undercuts Trump on election and Hunter Biden inquiries
Outgoing Attorney General Bill Barr said he saw no reason to appoint a special counsel to look into the lame-duck president’s claims about the 2020 election or to name one for the tax investigation of President-elect Biden’s son. In his final public appearance as a member of Trump’s Cabinet, Barr also backed up official reports that Russia was behind a massive hack of US government agencies, not China as the president has feebly suggested.

Mitch McConnell successfully blocked mandatory paid leave for workers in new relief package
In March, Congress passed a law mandating that workers were able to draw two weeks of paid sick leave if they contracted the virus, two weeks of paid leave to care for a quarantining relative, and up to 10 weeks of paid family leave to care for a child whose school or daycare closed for pandemic-related reasons. Today’s Action: Protect yourself, and others, this holiday weekend

In the weeks after Thanksgiving, new cases surged to record levels – due in large part to Thanksgiving travels and gatherings during this critical time. And now we face Christmas and New Years.

More than 3200,000 Americans have died, and new daily cases are astronomically higher now than when states first instituted stay-at-home proclamations, with 215,000 new confirmed cases every day. It’s only going to get worse if people continue to gather and travel in the coming week. This pandemic is out of control.

If you haven’t traveled yet and were considering, please reconsider and save lives instead – in many cases, the person who dies wasn’t the person who made the decision to ignore safe practices guidelines. If you’re planning to gather with anyone outside of your immediate household, even locally, please reconsider for the same reason.

But, adjusting your plans doesn’t mean you have to miss out entirely on social contact! Here are a few tips to reduce your chances of catching or spreading the virus.

Holidays over the internet. This is, by far, the safest way to gather with your loved ones. Love them…by limiting their infection chances. Zoom is offering free, unlimited video conferencing tomorrow through Saturday and Dec. 30-Jan. 2 – so plan ahead to teach your less tech-savvy family members how to use it! Brainstorm now how to make your holidays a special day, whether it’s unwrapping presents on video chat, cooking the same dishes in separate locations, watching a movie together via Teleparty, or teaching your family Zoom games!

Holidays outside. Keep it distant and keep it short! Consider drive-by carols from the car window, doorstep gift exchanges, and sanitized dessert drop-offs to show your love while staying safe. If you’re gathering with anyone outside of your immediate family (remember – this is currently banned in many states/counties), insist that it’s outside and well-spaced, make sure everyone takes a test in advance, and keep your masks on.

Safety means we don’t spend the kind of time with loved ones we long for this year. But it also means the chance to do so next holiday season when this nightmare is behind us. And that’s the best gift of all.
