Today’s Action: Congressional spending bill – no more detention beds!
A recently uncovered video shows that a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy named Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez lost his life due to missteps and utter neglect by Border Patrol agents while he was in their custody. Despite serious signs of ill health, Vasquez was jailed and ignored instead of being sent to a hospital. He died in a pool of his own blood.
This tragic and unnecessary loss is a shocking reminder of the severe brutality of Trump’s border policies.
Congress has until December 20 to create a spending bill that Trump signs off on – otherwise, the prospects grow continuously more bleak for a yearlong spending bill, which would include much needed budget increases to various domestic programs.
But at the same time, some of the ‘compromises’ to close the deal are absolutely unacceptable. Trump wants more money for detention beds to ramp up his horror at the border, more wall spending, and the (continued) ability to reallocate funds around as he pleases.
Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them:
- not one dollar toward Trump’s unnecessary, hateful border wall or additional detention beds in the upcoming spending bill
- eliminate Trump’s ability to steal funds from other budgets to fund his xenophobic border policy
- cut funding to Trump’s anti-immigration campaign, by Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs & Border Protection (CBP).
So why, you might ask, aren’t we simply pushing for a continued resolution on last year’s budget? Well, in addition to woefully underfunding programs that are vital to tens of millions of Americans, the current spending levels are also allowing Trump to run concentration camps at the border and build sections of wasteful border wall. A continuing resolution will maintain that status quo. We’ve been moving in the wrong direction, and this our chance to turn things around — at least to some extent.
The status quo is unacceptable. We need Democrats to push harder than ever this week, and Republicans to know we, and our voting power, aren’t going anywhere.
