Today’s Action: Eliminate the Jim Crow filibuster

February is Black History Month, dedicated to celebrating the incredible achievements and contributions of Black people to our nation’s history. It’s also Black Futures Month, established by Movement 4 Black Lives in 2015, to envision a society where Black people are truly free and self-determined.

Democrats in Congress have fresh policies on the docket that seek to overturn racist and oppressive laws specifically designed to keep Black Americans from achieving real equality and representation. Among our goals are the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act (overturning voter suppression) and Statehood for Washington, D.C. (which would become the first Black-plurality state in the nation).

But we won’t be able to achieve these or much else in Congress as long as the Jim Crow filibuster remains in place.

What’s the filibuster? Ending debate and officially advancing most legislation to a final vote in the Senate requires 60 votes. So, the minority party may simply vote against ending debate – thereby blocking legislation that would otherwise pass with a simple majority. No long speeches into the night; the minority has nearly the same power as the majority, thanks to the filibuster.

The filibuster’s past and present is racist. It has been used countless times since the early 20th-century to block major pieces of civil rights legislation, and extend the life of horrific Jim Crow laws — prompting Rep. Ayanna Pressley to accurately dub it “the Jim Crow Filibuster.” President Obama has said the filibuster made it impossible for him to effectively govern. And, the GOP will use it to block our legislation designed to advance the voting rights of Black Americans.

Black Votes Matter. Let’s make that a lot more real at the federal level this Black History / Black Futures Month by eliminating the filibuster. And, we’ll be back with more ways to celebrate later this month – stay tuned!

Call or email your Senators and demand they eliminate the Jim Crow filibuster, to pave the way for civil rights policy that liberates and empowers Black Americans.
