Today’s Action: Demand William Barr recuse himself from the Mueller investigation
William Barr, Trump’s pick for permanent United States Attorney General, is on his second and final day of confirmation hearings in the Senate. If confirmed, Barr will replace the ousted Jeff Sessions and temporary-AG Matthew G. Whitacre. And, he’ll be the new boss of Mueller’s Russian collusion investigation.
Barr has a record of outspoken opposition to Mueller’s task. In 2017, he was a candidate to be Trump’s chief defense lawyer in the Russia investigation, and questioned the validity of it in the New York Times. And last June, Barr sent an unsolicited 20-page memo to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, slamming Mueller’s inquiry as “fatally misconceived.”
Barr is overtly biased, and must not be placed in charge of arguably the biggest conspiracy to ever hit the White House — unless, at the very least, he provides explicit assurances that he can keep his personal opinions out of the picture.
Protecting the Mueller investigation has bipartisan support. Republican Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Mitt Romney (R-UT) have joined Democrats in making public statements demanding Mueller’s work continue unfettered.
The investigation has so far uncovered over 30 criminal charges and four guilty pleas. But there’s more to go. We need every member of Congress – incoming, outgoing, and continuing – fighting back against Trump’s desperate attempt to bury his own crimes.
And today, that means holding William Barr to some parameters.
