Today’s Action: Block Trump’s SCOTUS nomination until after midterms
In 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stole President Obama’s Supreme Court nomination. McConnell refused to even hold hearings much less a vote, and then changed Senate rules to allow a simple majority to muscle through Trump’s choice, Neil Gorsuch, for the same seat — effectively stealing a conservative Court majority.
The reason, McConnell argued, is that the nomination was too close to an election.
Now that Justice Anthony Kennedy, the closest thing to a moderate on the Court, is retiring, the hypocrisy of McConnell’s logic is painfully obvious. President Obama nominated Merrick Garland 237 days before Election Day 2016, and we are now just 129 days from the 2018 elections, which could flip the Senate to Democratic control.
Kennedy’s successor on an ideologically 4-4 Court will have massive implication on the lives of millions of Americans. If the next Justice is a Trump ideologue, we can be certain that the vulnerable will suffer, the wealthy will we be coddled, and corruption will continue to flourish at the highest reaches of power.
Our best chance to stop this travesty is to force McConnell to follow the precedent he created.
McConnell announced he’ll push through any nomination this fall before the elections of 35 Senate seats. But many Republicans are afraid to be held responsible for jeopardizing Roe v. Wade.
That’s why we must push Democrats and Republicans alike to give McConnell a taste of his own medicine and stand firm in voting down any Trump nomination that arrives before midterms.
